The 2016 Healthy Skin Awards were announced at a special awards night on Thursday, 14 April 2016.
This is a major annual event for the Skin & Cancer Foundation Inc, Australia’s centre of excellence in skin health and home for dermatology in Victoria. The principal aim of the Awards is to promote healthy skin practices across Australia.
Federal Assistant Minister for Health, the Hon Ken Wyatt AM MP, joined leading dermatologists and other prominent medical practitioners, major sponsors, business and community leaders, patients and supporters of the Foundation at the special Awards evening, held at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art.
Mr Wyatt emphasised the crucial role the Healthy Skin Awardees play in Australia’s fight against skin cancer and melanoma.
“They’ve shown a demonstrated commitment to educating their workforce, members, or the community by delivering skin health programs, educating or reporting,” Mr Wyatt said. “I would like to commend all the nominees for the important work they are doing. We know Australia has the highest incidence of skin cancer in the world. Australians are two to three times more likely to get skin cancer than people living in Canada, the US, and the UK.”

King and Wood Mallesons
A winner at the 2015 Healthy Skin Awards, King & Wood Mallesons again deserve to be recognised for their ongoing corporate skin check program. What has been most impressive and fascinating about this program, which has been in place for over 15 years, is the statistics it has provided. King & Wood Mallesons have provided 2,348 skin checks, of which 233 have been referred for further consultation. Over 75% of staff surveyed considered skin cancer screening to be one of the most valued and accessed benefits of the firm.
National Basketball League team, Melbourne United, has an extensive community program, including their famous You Got Skoold program run in primary schools. The club works with primary schools across Victoria, to get more kids involved in basketball and physical activity. Melbourne United approached the Foundation last year for assistance on engaging with children and their parents about the importance of skin health. The introduction of the skin health component to Melbourne United's primary schools program will raise awareness of the importance of skin health and sun protection amongst our younger generation. The club deserves to be commended on its initiative.
Community Chef is a Victorian local government-owned social enterprise that produces over 100,000 meals every month for society's most vulnerable people. That's over 1.2 million meals each year for those in aged care and the homeless, delivered from their sophisticated plant in Altona. Community Chef is focused on improving the healthy skin benefits of its meals and recently approached the Foundation for information on nutrition and healthy skin. Community Chef has the potential to have a significant social impact with a large and diverse group of Australians, and is a deserving recipient of the Healthy Skin Award.
As part of their Evolve program, Macquarie Life created two information packs dealing with skin cancer and melanoma for their policy holders. Macquarie Life approached the Skin & Cancer Foundation Inc to collaborate on the development of these packs to ensure credibility and authority. The program provides policy holders with detailed information about types of skin cancer, signs and symptoms, treatment, prevention, and tips to live a healthy lifestyle. The Foundation believes that this has been one of the most impressive programs by a major life insurer aimed at skin cancer awareness in Australia.
