10 tips to protect your skin this snow season

If you're off to the snow this winter, remember that you'll be at a higher altitude, so UV radiation exposure will be much higher than at sea level. In addition, snow reflects up to 90% of the UV light from the sun*, which means greater UV exposure to your skin.

Because it's cold, windy and often cloudy, it can be easy to forget to apply and reapply sunscreen during a day on the slopes. But it is just as important to stay sun-safe at the snow as it is at the beach in the middle of summer.

Follow these important sun protection tips to stay sun-safe this snow season:

  • Use a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen whenever you're outdoors.
  • Apply sunscreen liberally and evenly to all exposed skin. Remember that you will probably remove layers of clothing as you warm up throughout the day, so don't forget to apply sunscreen to all skin that will see the sun throughout the day.
  • Use a moisturising sunscreen. The combination of cool, dry air and strong winds can be particularly harsh on the skin.
  • Be sure to cover delicate, and often-missed spots, such as the lips, neck, scalp, forehead, temples and around the eyes.
  • Reapply every two hours. If you work up a heavy sweat from your skiing/boarding, you should reapply more regularly.
  • Always wear a lip balm with an SPF 30 or higher.
  • Carry a small sunscreen and lip balm with you on the slopes - don't wait until lunch time to reapply your sunscreen, do it on the lift.
  • Cover up - wear items like beanies and ski masks, which leave as little skin exposed to the wind and sun as possible.
  • Choose a ski mask or sunglasses with a greater UV protection. Protect your eyes, eyelids and the sensitive skin around your eyes.
  • Stay hydrated - when you're active but in a cool climate all day you can easily forget to drink water and become dehydrated. Dry skin burns and cracks.
